Billbug Control

How We Can Help?

Most Idahoans who’ve attempted to maintain a lawn or garden, will be all too familiar with the dreaded Billbug. These annoying pests are a type of weevil that feed on grass and garden crops, and can easily lay waste to your lawn during the spring and summer months.
The adults lay their eggs in the grass (up to five a day), and then the larvae eat the grass from the inside out. This tag-team of lawn destruction leaves unsightly brown and bald patches all over your grass that some confuse with signs of drought or excess heat. The tell-tale sign that it’s a billbug infestation is the sawdust-like residue along the cement paths lining the grass.

Lawn Master knows how to recognize the signs, and applies a multi-step approach for eliminating these insects.

Working Process

Upon arrival, a qualified technician will do an inspection and confirm that billbugs are really the issue. After that, we find that two lawn treatments are usually enough for most infestations.

Whenever possible, the first treatment should be scheduled around mid-May, before the adults have had an opportunity to lay their eggs. In cases where extensive damage has already occurred, the best course of action is to target larvae still living beneath the soil and nip the problem in the bud.

As with most lawn care issues, maintaining a healthy lawn through proper fertilization, mowing, and regular weed control, all play an important role in prevention. Whatever the plan ends up being, our team will be at your side to resolve the issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

The lawn will start showing brown, dead-looking spots. Also, there will sometimes be sawdust-looking residue around the bases of the plants and on nearby cement, which can look similar to salt damage you'd see in the winter. A good test is to try pulling up one of the brown grass areas with your hand. If it comes up easily, that could mean the roots have been eaten by larvae. To remove any doubts, schedule a consultation with one of our pros. If billbugs are there, we will find them.
Certain grasses and crops are more attractive to them than others. Maintaining a healthy, well-kept lawn is also very helpful. The most effective measure though is to treat the lawn at the first sign of their presence and maintain treatments long-term to prevent them from returning.
They tend to move from lawn to lawn at nighttime during their active season. Sometimes you can see them crossing sidewalks.

The first treatment should be around the middle of May, before the adults have a chance to lay eggs.
